East Kootenay Youth Receive Access to Seed Financing and Mentorship
Cranbrook BC – November 24, 2004
The Canadian Youth Business Foundation (CYBF) and the Community Futures Development Corporation of the SE Region of BC (CFDC) have established a partnership agreement to offer mentorship, learning resources and business start-up loans to aspiring young entrepreneurs aged 18-34 in Cranbrook and surrounding areas. CFDC will be joining the 44 existing CYBF sites across Canada serving 848 local communities.
An official launch to mark this occasion occurred on Tuesday November 23 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, at the Prestige Inn located at 209 Van Horne Street South in Cranbrook. Local VIP’s from the community, including Will Pearce - Cranbrook City Administrator, spoke about the importance of assistance for aspiring young entrepreneurs.
Young entrepreneurs, Russ Pebbles of Funhogz Gear Exchange and Jodie Parker of Mug Shots Bistro Internet Café also spoke about their entrepreneurial experiences at the launch.
Russ is the owner of Funhogz Gear Exchange, a Cranbrook based outdoors store specializing in consignment sporting goods and outdoor equipment. In 2003 FunHogz’s was awarded the Chamber of Commerce “Entrepreneurial Spirit Award” .
Jodie Parker is the co-owner of Mug Shots Bistro Internet Café in Fernie BC. Mug Shots serves breakfast, specialty coffees, soups, paninis, smoothies and homemade baking. They also have seven high-speed Internet computers for customers use.
“Our Board of Directors are enthusiastic regarding this new partnership which will fulfill a demand from youth in all of our communities”, comments Rob Gay, General Manager of CFDC.
Community Futures Development Corporation provides a variety of business services to their communities including development loans, technical support, training and information including access to government programs; business libraries; business databases and statistical reports.
“We are proud to officially launch our partnership with CFDC in Cranbrook,” comments Vivian Woytiuk, CYBF CEO. “We have helped launch over 1000 businesses across Canada since 1996 and will continue to provide access to business start-up loans, mentorship and learning resources to empower aspiring young Canadians entrepreneurs.”
CYBF offers young entrepreneurs start-up financing up to $15,000 with the support of a business mentor. The business mentor increases the likelihood of the entrepreneur’s success through the transfer of experienced business knowledge. Training and support are provided for the mentoring relationship as well as the young entrepreneur’s business.
